The Spring House Brewery Taproom at 25 W. King St. is slated to open by the end of January, owner Matt Keasey said.
The bar in the Hager Arcade will feature beers made at the Spring House Brewery at 2519 Main St. in Conestoga and offer a light food menu of soups, sandwiches and some entrees, Keasey said.
The 1,700-square foot space, the former home of a deli and gourmet foods shop, is being refurbished with a central bar. It will have seating for roughly 80, with some outside seating during warmer weather, Keasey said.

Starting next week an extremely limited number of Mad Elf cases will be shipped randomly to beer distributors in our home state. The purchaser of these cases will have the opportunity to be one of the first people to see the new Tröegs Brewery in Hershey when we open in the fall 2011.

So how do you know if you bought the special case? There are no markings on the outside of the case but once you open it two things will make the case special – there will be an envelope taped to the lid of case containing a Troegs Ticket and 12 of the bottles will adorn our classic Mad Elf logo.

“World’s best gluten-free beer” debuts in the US

One of Spain’s biggest brewers, Estella Damm, introduces its gluten-free “real beer tasting” Daura, to the US market.

Currently available in twelve nations around the world (Australia, UK, Germany), Daura holds the title of “World’s Best Gluten-Free Beer” for 2008 and 2009. No gluten free category was included in the 2010 contest.

Daura does not use specialty grains, like some gluten free beers. Brewers have produced a number of specialty grain beers by non-gluten grain ingredients such as the popular buckwheat and sorghum, as well as rice, maize, corn, sunflower, amaranth, flax, millet, quinoa, teff, wild rice, soybean, ragi and rape.

Daura has been de-glutened through the brewing process. “The gluten protein [is stripped] from the barley malt, leaving only the ‘real beer’ taste.”

“DAURA’s gluten content level is less than 6 parts per million (ppm), far below the 20 ppm required for gluten free products, according to the Codex Alimentarious, the international food and drinks standard set by the World Health Organization and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.”

A Daura 4-pack costs $7.99 retail and can now be found in these American stores: Whole Foods, Publix,Harris Teeter, Total Wine & Spirits and BevMo.

Since I've gone Glutenfree on the advice of one of my doctor's I have found LARABARS !

I love them. I miss my beer sure-- there is no denying that BUT I am feeling better.

I try and have protein every 2 hours, so that's where my LARABAR comes in handy.

My favorite flavors are Key lime and lemon.

I am still trying to find a good gluten free beer. Been drinking vodka tonics and wine.

My food allergies are: wheat, egg, peanut and cow's milk.

Not fun.

Got this great email thought I would share since these are my favorite before I went Gluten Free (GF).

Farmhouse Ales for the Fall
These rustic country ales were historically brewed in Belgium and France, by farmowners to provide sustenance to their workers, and have survived until now since they have such amazing flavors and complexity. We have just put on two different farmhouse ales in celebration of the coming of fall.

Biere de Garde is our version of a French farmhouse-style ale,
it is deep amber in color, smells of baking bread, toasted malt, and caramel, the flavors follow the aroma with a touch of spice in the finish. A true taste of fall in a glass.

Saison is our Belgian farmhouse ale. It is a cloudy golden color, very dry and light in body, with complex flavors of tropical fruit and spice. This beer also pairs great with almost any type of food.

And we have plenty of other fall beers on the line up for the next two months. Be on the look out for Oktoberfest, Rauchtoberfest, (our smoked Oktoberfest), Abbey Dubbel, Munich Dunkel and of course Pumpkin Ale.

Redbridge gluten-free beer seemed to be a thing of the past earlier this year. All of a sudden it disappeared from grocery stores shelves. Tiffany Janes at Celiac-Disease.com reported that after speaking with a representative from Anheuser-Busch, she confirmed that the beer was being reformulated, not discontinued.

It seems the beer was too high in alcohol to be sold in every state. The beer was reformulated to contain only 4% alcohol instead of 4.7%. This now allows the beer to be sold in all 50 states.

The reformulated version of Redbridge is just as good, if not better, than the previous version. It is the perfect ending to a long, hot summer day. Pizza and beer; burgers & an ice cold beer; nachos & beer – it doesn’t get any better than that.

Celiacs Guide to Gluten Free Beer

Excellent article. I don't have celiacs disease but I am trying to go gluten free (gf) on the recommendation of 1 of my doctors. I do have some food allergies: WHEAT, cows milk, peanuts, egg whites so my diet and what I eat and drink has come to a screeching halt and I am rethinking everything. I'm trying.

Since I have changed my diet and increased some vit's and minerals, I have been feeling a little better.

It is one of the great ironies of the now-gargantuan brewfest that has become Philly Beer Week: The bigger it gets, the less it is about Philadelphia's own beers.
Indeed, as the festival floods local taprooms with visiting brewers from San Diego to Belgium, some hometown beer guys like Bill Barton of the Philadelphia Brewing Co. gnash their teeth as they temporarily lose tap handles, and drinkers' attention, while the hops-light is shining brightest.
"They should call it Beer Week in Philly, instead, because it's not about the locals," grumbles Barton. "If you're from around the corner [people] just aren't that interested."
Beer Week executive director Don Russell disagrees, insisting that the local breweries are active participants, and that the festivities boost beer awareness for the rest of the year. In fact, Russell is among those who have long argued that Philadelphia is "America's greatest beer-drinking city" in part because of its embrace of an international range of beers, as well as those from Kensington.
Still, we decided it was time - before that extra tidal wave of out-of-town ale hits when Beer Fest opens Friday - to give the region's homegrown beers a closer look.
And thus was born the first Philadelphia Inquirer Local Brew-vitational, a comprehensive tasting of the fresh flavors being crafted by the local beer scene right now. Which were the most exciting new creations, and who has the hottest hand at the kettle? What are the big trends? And, has our beer scene defined its own unique identity?
These were just a few of the questions going into the Brew-vitational, which asked craft brewers throughout the region, from Harrisburg to Milton, Del., to submit their latest efforts (issued in the last six months) to a panel of seven judges for consideration. for the rest of the article:

The top 13 finalists, which scored the highest averages in the first round, were re-tasted in the final round then ranked by total points. Beers 14-28 are listed in the order of their average score from the first round, based on a five-point scale.

1. McKenzie Brew House Biere de Garde:
A rustic amber farmhouse ale of stunning complexity. 7.5% ABV: 35 pts.

2. Flying Fish Exit 16:
A double IPA made with three kinds of rice; the light color and body belied its richness and power. 8.2%: 25 pts.

3. Tröegs Flying Mouflan:
A dark, powerful barleywine with two personalities — vibrant with citrusy hops when young, but with age, something profoundly mellow. 9.3%: 15 pts.

4. Gen. Lafayette Inn The Grim Reaper:
An Imperial Stout that melds full-on decadence with the balance of a good port — “roasty, toasty, and chocolate.” 8.5%: 15 pts.

5. Stoudts Karnival Kölsch:
A crisp and refreshing take on the light German classic that one judge called “the best kölsch I’ve ever tasted.” 4.8%: 13 pts.

6. Earth Bread + Brewery ABA:
A drinkable brown ale so balanced between dark malts and American hops, one judge declared brewer Tom Baker “an artist.” 5.5%: 10 pts.

7. Weyerbacher Tiny
Belgian-Style Imperial Stout, 11.8%: 8 pts.

8. Stoudts Heifer-in-Wheat
Hefeweizen, 5%: 6 pts.

The golden brew will debut in Philadelphia on June 4th, 2010 just in time for Philly Beer Week before rolling out to bars and restaurants across the country later this summer.

Brewed locally at the Victory Brewery in Chester County, the Summer Love Ale is a golden ale made with pale malts, German hops and Brandywine River water. This specific style of beer was chosen because it has a broad appeal and will be accessible for casual beer drinkers, but will still retain exciting hop notes.

----My first sip of beer was a Schmidt. I can remember my Great Aunt Tiny getting a case of Schmidt's delievered ever week. She lived next door and would often have a glass of beer in the afternoon and 1 day about the age of 7/8, she let me have a sip.

William H. Pflaumer, 76, the last of the local beer barons, died of heart failure on Saturday, May 22, at Pennsylvania Hospital.
Mr. Pflaumer was a quintessential Philadelphia character widely known as "Billy" or, more grandly, "Billy the Beer King."
The final owner of the brewery that produced Schmidt's - Philadelphia's best-known beer - he was sentenced to federal prison in 1983 for evading more than $125,000 in excise taxes.
The Christian Schmidt Brewing Co., between Second and Hancock Streets south of Girard Avenue, was the city's last independent brewery and had been a local institution since 1860. In the years since its closure, the city has become home to numerous craft breweries that have revived the city's long brewing tradition.
After Mr. Pflaumer went to prison in 1986, Schmidt's brands were sold to G. Heileman Brewing Co. of LaCrosse, Wis., in 1987 and the brewery closed.
In January 2000, the vacant brewery complex was sold for $1.8 million to developer Bart Blatstein, and razed.
Today, it is the site of the 28-acre Piazza at Schmidts, a retail, restaurant, and apartment complex.
Beginning in 1959 with $7,000 and one truck, Mr. Pflaumer parlayed the family beer distributorship into a business so large that he was able to build a 227-acre estate in Cape May County known as Beer World, which featured a 28-room mansion with guesthouses, a private swimming pool, a lake, and a golf course.
Besides the brewery, which was the country's ninth-largest in 1980, Mr. Pflaumer and his family controlled a large beer distributorship and a beer trucking company, which allowed him to dominate the industry in Southeastern Pennsylvania.
A 1980 Inquirer series reported that his various enterprises were grossing an estimated $215 million annually.
At the time of his death, Mr. Pflaumer was living in the 1300 block of North Mascher Street, next to the family beer distributorship. The rowhouse block in Fishtown is not far from the site of his former brewery.
A son, Robert, said Mr. Pflaumer's principal residence until recently had been on Fairfax Road off School Lane in Drexel Hill. For more than 20 years, it was storied for its display of Christmas decorations, according to a 1989 Inquirer story.
Mr. Pflaumer's wife, Jeannette, had died in 1988, a day before her 55th birthday, and he had spent most of 1986 and 1987 in prison. But in an interview for that Christmastime story, Mr. Pflaumer said, "People don't care about your petty problems. They enjoy the lights. They want to see the lights."
Mr. Pflaumer grew up in North Philadelphia, where his father, also William, was a beer distributor. Mr. Pflaumer joined the business after graduating from Northeast High School.
In 1976, he bought Schmidt's for $15.9 million.
The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board approved the purchase, ruling that Mr. Pflaumer was "of good repute" in giving him a license, even though he had a long history of legal troubles.
"He once illegally accepted $800,000 worth of free beer from a brewer [and] gave bar owners false invoices so that they could skim extra profits and make false tax deductions," an Inquirer series on the LCB reported in 1980.
"He had on his payroll people whose backgrounds included ties to organized crime and records as mob enforcers; one such employee had hit another man in the face - with a hatchet."
The series also reported on federal charges that he had pasted forged Schlitz, Piels, and Schaefer labels on kegs of Ballantine beer in the course of winning the Ballantine distribution business from a rival company.
At the time of the LCB approval, Mr. Pflaumer had two federal misdemeanor convictions for falsely labeling the Ballantine's and for conspiring to evade taxes.
All that was before his 1983 federal sentencing to three years for tax evasion.
Mr. Pflaumer was "a stocky man who prefers work clothes to suits, slicks his dark hair back and habitually wears dark glasses because of a congenital eye defect," The Inquirer reported in 1980.
Besides the brewery, with annual sales of $175 million on production of 3.8 million barrels, the newspaper said, Mr. Pflaumer "owns all stock in K.M.A. Leasing (the initials stand for 'kiss my a-," according to court records.) It is the biggest beer hauling firm in Pennsylvania; its assets include 118 tractors and 175 trailers."
Besides those assets, the newspaper reported, Mr. Pflaumer "has built a huge beer distributorship, William H. Pflaumer & Sons.
"The LCB prohibits interlocking businesses in the beer trade; the same person cannot hold both a beer manufacturer's license and a distributor's license.
"But the LCB allowed Pflaumer to keep his distributorship in the family by turning over its stock to his wife, Jeanette, and his children, through a trustee.
"Pflaumer is often present at his wife's distributorship; she is there about two days a month."
After his jail time, the sale of his brewery, the death of wife, and the sale of the mansion in Cape May County, that building - then the Ponderlodge Mansion in state-owned Villas Wildlife Management Area - was destroyed in an overnight blaze on Oct. 7, 2008. State investigators ruled the blaze an arson.
Robert Pflaumer said his father had helped found Operation Pops, which sent inner-city children to summer camps and supported Police Athletic League programs.
"He aided untold numbers of families in need," his son said. "He didn't take time out for himself. He was a workaholic."
Besides his son, Mr. Pflaumer is survived by sons Ronald and Fred, daughters Barbara Samuelian and Jeanette Tierney, a brother, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. His wife, Jeanette, died in 1988, and a son, William, died in 2006.
A visitation is scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, May 29, at the O'Leary Funeral Home, 640 E. Springfield Rd., Springfield, Delaware County, followed by an 11 a.m. funeral there. Burial will be in SS. The World Beer Cup is a global beer competition that evaluates beers from around the world and recognizes the most outstanding. The front of the pub is finished and we are ecstatic at the end result. Thanks to the Historic committee and zoning on giving us the go ahead, Venture Lititz for helping with the facade grant and

Two Dudes for doing a great job. We wanted it to look like a traditional British Victorian pub and the paint used in the UK has a very high gloss. Two Dudes managed to source an ultra high gloss paint and I am sure you will agree it looks fantastic. The next step is to get some hanging baskets as anyone who has been to London in the summer will attest to the fantastic display of flowers that the pubs have.

The response to the pub has been fantastic. Many of the local residents have thanked us for opening as they were in dire need of a place that they wanted to hang out.

As promised we are rotating our beer selection and have had a variety on offer since opening. One of the favourites has been the Young's Double Chocolate Stout. If you haven't tried it, you must. A dedicated Bacardi and coke drinker who didn't like beer has been converted and now drinks this instead.

We also have traditional British food alongside some more traditional American standards. We just got British style sausages, so try the Bangers and Mash. We also make Scotch Eggs and Sausage Rolls. HP Sauce is available which is a great condiment for the above. HP Salad Cream, which chef Marco Pierre White claimed as being "One of the greatest culinary inventions", is available for a variety of uses including a salad dressing of course. Branston Pickle goes great with the pork pies. A must have is the Sticky Toffee Pudding.

Cask night is April 30th. I plan to stop in and sample some great brews from the casks.

JoBoy's Brew Pub opened last week at the former Summy House Restaurant, 31 S. Main St., Manheim. The roughly 80-seat restaurant features Southern-style barbecue and sells handcrafted beer made on the premises. The menu features pulled pork, beef brisket, ribs and chicken dishes. The restaurant, which has a bar area and two back dining rooms, brews its beer in small batches in the back, offering a rotation of selections at three beer taps. Owners are Jeff and Jo Harless. Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.----- Monday through Saturday.

Tavern opens---- Lititz Junction Tavern opened Friday at 55 N. Water St., Lititz. Formerly known at The Water Street Café, the three-floor restaurant has seating for 425, including large banquet rooms. It also features a railroad balcony, garden room and outdoor garden patio. The menu features sandwiches, salads, pastas, steaks and seafood. It has a full bar with 12 beers on tap. The restaurant is part of the Lititz Junction Complex, which includes shops and the soon-to-open Pennsylvania Quilt & Textile Museum and Kready's Country Store Museum, which will house the contents of Manheim's old E.E. There will be samples from up to 50 breweries and up to 3,500 beer lovers from across the United States will attend this event. The ticket price covers unlimited beer samples from participating breweries, a collector's sampling mug, and entertainment from several bands. Tickets sales will be limited to 3,500 people. Tickets will go on sale April 1, 2010. We recommend you buy tickets in advance as last year's event was a complete sellout. Tickets are $40 in advance and will not be available at the door. Tickets Prices are Tax deductible and all proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of Central Pennsylvania.

We have secured 30,000 square feet of festival space and will have up to 50 breweries. There will be food concessions and a seated area at the back of the festival site. There is no judging at this event; rather, it is an opportunity for craft-brew lovers to enjoy and sample 70+ products from some of the regions finest breweries.

After a lot of hard work and the help of skilled friends the pub opened on March 8th.

Here is some info....The owners acquired an original British pub sign from a good friend, who felt it will be put to good use. It comes from a Marston's pub that is located on the outskirts of Nottingham. The pub was refurbished about 15 years ago and the original sign removed. We feel very lucky to have the use of this sign and of course it answered the perplexing question of what to call the pub.

The Bulls Head has an excellent beer selection including 14 taps and two cask ales plus over 70 bottled beers. Our pub menu has a number of traditional British pub items as well a some American goodies. Basically something for everyone.

The objective has always been to create a true public house where people of the community and further afield can gather over good libations and food to relax, mingle, chat and sort out the world's problems.

In another raid, State Police hit beer distributor, Origlio's, in Far Northeast

Pennsylvania State Police have staged another beer raid,

confiscating about a dozen cases from a leading distributor

in Northeast Philadelphia and ordering it to stop selling several

well-known imports, including Duvel, a popular Belgian beer

sold throughout the Philadelphia region.

Agents from the State Police

Department's Bureau of Liquor Code Enforcement (BLCE)

descended Monday night on Origlio's Beverage,

a wholesale distributor in the Far Northeast whose primary

brands include Coors and Yuengling.

The police seized about a dozen cases from a small

California beermaker, Russian River Brewing Co.,

and ordered Origlio's to stop selling Duvel and other beers,

including Hacker-Pschorr, Paulaner and

Monk's Cafe Ale, developed in Belgium

for the Philadelphia bar at 16th and Spruce streets.

As in armed raids conducted last week

against three Philadelphia taprooms, the State Police

alleged that the targeted beers were not properly

registered with the state Liquor Control Board

for sale in Pennsylvania - a process involving

limited paperwork and a $75 fee.

A blockade that threatened to strangle supplies of top Belgian beers to home
and neighboring European markets ended in late January, after management and
unions said a compromise was reached. Workers barricaded Stella Artois,
Jupiler and Hoegaarden breweries for two weeks to protest owners
Anheuser-Busch InBev's plans to cut 10% of its European workforce.

". . . the unions and management will start from scratch with meetings of the works council that will deal with problems site by site," union representative
Tangui Cornu said. The protest action began after the group announced on
Jan.7 that it planned to cut around 800 jobs in western Europe.

Supermarket and convenience store workers rallied on Tuesday at the state capitol in Harrisburg, in support of the right of their employers to sell beer in Pennsylvania.

Backed by a fife and drum corps, dozens of supermarket and convenience store workers –- many of them on the clock -– carried signs at a rally pushing another attempt by lawmakers to relax laws governing beer sales in Pennsylvania.

State senator John Rafferty (R-Montgomery, Chester, Berks) thinks the Wegmans supermarket chain, which has zero violations for alcohol sales to minors, has the answer:

“They have a 100-percent carding policy. You need to show an ID an order to purchase alcohol in a Wegmans. That’s going to be part of the legislation we’re introducing.”

In addition to allowing grocery stores to sell beer, Rafferty’s legislation would also allow beer distributors -- who currently have to sell beer by the case or keg -- to sell six-packs.

Restaurants and taverns, currently limited to sales of two six-packs, would be allowed to sell from a six-pack to up to a case.

Scratch #27-2010 is a collaboration beer that Troegs developed with Scharffen Berger Chocolate Company.

Cases and growlers of Scratch #27-2010 will go on sale at 12 noon on Thurday, February 11. We will be tapping firkins at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. and the tasting room will be open until 6 p.m. We will also have soft pretzels available while the firkins are on tap.

Here’s a little background on the beer:
O.G.: 18 Plato
A.B.V.: 6.7%
I.B.U.: 30
Malt: Pils, Crystal, Chocolate, Roast, Special B
Adjuncts: Flaked Barley, Lactose, Chocolate Nibs, Vanilla Beans
Yeast: House Ale Yeast
Hops: Galena, Simcoe

Scratch #27-2010 begins a new fold in the Scratch series. For the next several batches individual Troegs brewers will create recipes of their choice. First up, The brewers had a hankering for a sweet stout, so the Troegs brothers and all the brewers met with Scharffen Berger Chocolate Company engineers to eat ridiculous amounts of cocoa nibs and chocolates over a few pints of beer.

This collaboration resulted in the delivery of a special blend of cocoa nibs that were added during the boiling process. In addition to the nibs, lactose was added at the end of the boil to give a little sweetness in the body. The addition of Galena and Simcoe hops lends a subtle fruity balance. After primary fermentation, the beer was aged for three weeks on a blend of cocoa nibs and Ugandan vanilla beans.

Dubbed Cocaoabunga, this unfiltered beer has a pleasant cocoa aroma, a subtle sweetness in the mouthfeel, a full-bodied flavor, and hints of vanilla. Enjoy! Sounds so good especially since it's a blizzard outside. Check weather conditions before traveling to Harrisburg tomorrow for this great event.
