Friday Night Lights scores 2 more seasons

Party in FNL land! NBC and DirecTV announced a deal on Monday for two more seasons, 13 episodes each. But wait—aren't Matt, Tim, Tyra, Lyla, and Landry all graduating? This should be interesting. 'Yelling at a Lot of People’ Saves ‘Friday Night Lights’ is the headlines by Bill Carter short article in The New York Times....http://tvdecoder.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/03/31/yelling-at-a-lot-of-people-saves-friday-night-lights/

The New Yorker Summit info.

Dear New Yorker reader, (and Tenpints reader)
As I'm sure you are aware, we find ourselves in a period of great adversity. Around the world, economic upheaval, war, and dwindling energy supplies threaten to derail the promise of prosperity. At home, Americans face increasing unemployment and financial hardship, and demand reform in health care, energy, and education. Any of these problems, taken individually, would be overwhelming enough; the Obama Administration, brought to power by hope and a hunger for new leadership, must tackle all of them at once.

In order to help make sense of these tumultuous and perplexing times, The New Yorker presents The New Yorker Summit, which will take place on Tuesday, May 5th, in New York City. New Yorker writers and editors, including Malcolm Gladwell and James Surowiecki, will join some of today's most influential minds, among them Zbigniew Brzezinski, Howard Dean, Elizabeth Edwards, Richard Holbrooke, Naomi Klein, and Nassim N. Taleb. From finance and foreign policy to health care and the environment, we will go beyond noise and spin to consider the prospects for meaningful change.

With an impressive lineup of policy gurus, esteemed thinkers, and advocates for reform, the Summit will be an excellent opportunity for you to gain an insider’s perspective on what is to come. Tickets are now available; I encourage you to join us for this important event.
Sincerely,
David Remnick
Editor, The New Yorker

Lancaster County and Dog breeding

Set the DVR's for ABC's NIGHTLINE tonight...
Puppies 'Viewed as Livestock' in Amish Community, Says Rescue Advocate
Exclusive Access: Cutting-Edge Facilities or Puppy Factories?
By SHARYN ALFONSI and TED GERSTEIN March 27, 2009

http://abcnews.go.com/Business/story?id=7187712&page=1

The amish are widely viewed as plain, peaceful people. Reclusive and private, most people only catch glimpses of them as they make their way through the hills of Pennsylvania's Dutch County in buggies.
Exclusive: Never-before-seen look at a facility where hundreds of dogs are bred.
But some of their perfectly manicured farms are home to a secret world. Lancaster County has been called the puppy mill capital of the U.S., and the trade is largely dominated by the Amish.
Watch the story tonight on "Nightline" at 11:35 p.m. ET
It is a world most people never see, but undercover video shot by Main Line Animal Rescue provides a startling look. Hundreds of puppies can be seen stacked in crate on top of crate. Most of those puppies will eventually be sold to pet stores, but their mothers will likely never know a home other than this.
The female breeders live their life producing litter after litter... until they can't any longer. Bill Smith, the founder of Main Line Animal Rescue, says that the dogs are then disposed of -- sometimes euthanized, sometimes shot. And it's perfectly legal. The truth must come out and the cruelty stopped!

30 years ago TMI memories

I do remember this....it was 30 years ago....memories of an atomic childhood in PA during the cold war..........The Three Mile Island accident of 1979 was a partial core meltdown in Unit 2 (a pressurized water reactor manufactured by Babcock & Wilcox) of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania near Harrisburg. It was the most significant accident in the history of the American commercial nuclear power generating industry, resulting in the release of an estimated 43,000 curies (1.59 PBq) of radioactive krypton,[1] but less than 20 curies (740 GBq) of the particularly hazardous iodine-131.[2].

LBC Lancaster Brewing Co. Truck

I love seeing the LBC Delivery truck. It makes me feel like a little kid seeing Mister Softee on a hot summer's night. Since the LBC warehouse is in my neighborhood at the the old ice house I often see the truck. This time I was able to snap a photo. Not a great one but one none the less.

Funny things I find

This is a picture of something I found in the neighborhood. The same week I found a tightly wrapped package in a white paper towel, held together with rubber bands, that turned out to be a prescription bottle (no label) filled with a liquid. I can only guess that the liquid was urine to pass a piss test. I neglected to take a picture of the urine sample....so definitely wanted to get a picture of this piece of litter.

Sam Adams Imperial series

What is Sam Adams up to.....For nearly twenty-five years, we have taken great pride in introducing American beer drinkers to "BIG BEERS"...beers that take existing styles and amp up the ingredients and flavor. Back in 1984, Samuel Adams Boston Lager® was a Big Beer and we have been doing Big Beers ever since. Our brewers are once again answering drinkers’ call for bigger, more intense craft brews with the Samuel Adams Imperial Series.

With the Samuel Adams Imperial Series our brewers offer beer lovers intense versions of some of their favorite traditional beer styles by boosting the quantity of ingredients and testing the limits of each traditional style. With more robust and complex flavors and nearly twice the alcohol by volume of your average beer, each style in the Imperial Series is intended to be savored and appreciated like a fine wine. Crafting these beers was a labor of love for our brewers and we are very excited to share them with you. - Mr. Jim K from the web site

Happy Birthday Shiner Spoetzl Brewery

Known as the "Little brewery in Shiner," the Spoetzl Brewery is an American brewery located in Shiner, Texas. Wholly owned by the Gambrinus Company, the brewery is best known for producing Shiner Bock, a dark German/Czech-style beer that is now distributed in 41 states. So for the 100year celebration of shiner they are brewing a 100 COMMEMORATOR....

Brewed in the Doppelbock tradition, this full bodied ale is as rich and robust as the 100 years of Shiner heritage it represents. I can't wait to find a six pack of this. Shiner is hard to find in PA and I often have to get in when I am in Delaware...I love me some Shiner! Prosit!!

Philly's Jill Scott on HBO No. 1 Ladies Det. Agency

The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is a series of ten novels by British author Alexander McCall Smith. The eponymous agency is located in Gaborone, capital of Botswana. Its founder is a Batswana woman, Mma Precious Ramotswe, who features as the stories' protagonist and main detective. The episodic novels are as much about the adventures and foibles of different characters as they are about solving mysteries. Each book in the series follows on from the previous book. They have been adapted for radio, television, and film.

The novel has been adapted for a HBO series staring Philly's own Jill Scott. The show starts with a special 2 hour series premiere March 29th at 8pm HBO.

DFW News-The Pale King

David Foster Wallace, who committed suicide last September, was working on a third novel at the time of his death, and his longtime publisher Little, Brown will release it in the spring of 2010. The Pale King takes place in an IRS facility in Illinois. "He told me he took accounting classes to learn more about it," says Little, Brown publisher Michael Pietsch, who's pulling together the 300-plus page novel from thousands of pages of drafts, notes, and outlines. Pietsch says that it's thrilling "to watch an idea turning into a chapter into an entire section of the book." He also told EW exclusively that upon publication Little, Brown will create a website to make large chunks of the manuscript available to fans, so they can see how the book came together and "have a detailed sense of Wallace as a working writer." —Tina Jordan

Old Soldier

This is an old photo of me. It was taken after US Army basic training in 1985. I was a 95 Bravo or Military Police. I look so young and served during the cold war, having been stationed in West Germany. I am 43 years old now. I was listening to Terry Gross on NPR-Fresh Air yesterday and she interviewed Former Marine Donovan Campbell who served three combat deployments, two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan. In Iraq, he commanded Joker One, a platoon of new Marines that he trained and transformed into a fighting unit. They were assigned to Ramadi, the capital of the Sunni-dominated Anbar province where they engaged in daily house-to-house combat with insurgents.
Campbell has written a memoir about his experiences with the platoon called Joker One: A Marine Platoon's Story of Courage, Leadership, and Brotherhood. Part of the proceeds from the book will go to various nonprofit organizations that help veterans, wounded soldiers and military families. I am going out tomorrow to buy his book. Here is a link to listen to his insightful interview.

L word ends Sunday Watch Showtime 8pm EST

What starts out as a celebration of friendship quickly ends in a web of betrayal and deceit. See how it all goes down, this Sunday on the series finale of The L Word. Poor Jenny. Everybody wanted her dead, and now she is. In Sunday night's finale of the sixth and last season of The L Word, the groundbreaking girl-on-girl melodrama fans have swooned over and bashed in equal measure, we see the lifeless, kooky novelist rolled from Bette and Tina's house on a gurney.

Victory's Wild Devil for Philly Beer Week

Philly Beer Week has begun!
WildDevil Comes to Philly Beer Week....
Victory Brewing Company's most popular brand, HopDevil Ale, will take on a "wild" characteristic with the March release of WildDevil Ale. The Brettanomyces fermented ale is brewed with the same American hops that give HopDevil its grapefruit, citrus and pine flavors but the addition of a signature Belgian yeast strain contributes a funky, sharp tang to this India Pale Ale. This Belgian treatment of the HopDevil recipe makes for a very worldly ale, in which German malts, American whole flower hops and now Belgian yeast combine. WildDevil will be available year-round in 750mL corked bottles and kegs will also be available for the initial period of its release. WildDevil Ale, will be offered during Philly Beer Week (March 6 - 15) at various locations throughout the city and the suburbs on draft and in 750mL bottles. The official release will be at The Brewer's Plate on Sunday, March 8th at the University of Pennsylvania. With Victory's presence in the VIP area along with DiBruno Bros., WildDevil is certain to be experimented with by attendees wishing to savor the ultimate in food and beer combinations.
