News from Iron Hill Brewery Lancaster PA

Happy New Years Mug Club Members!! To help you celebrate the new year, the great brewmasters at iron Hill brewery Lancaster, PA have just released two very special beers.

--------from an email I received.........

Maximus is this year’s version of our Belgian Dark Strong Ale or Quadrupel. This full bodied brown ale is full of dark fruit flavors, such as cherries and plums, and has a deep malt character complemented by the flavor of Belgian dark candi sugar. This beer weighs in at 10.5%, and is perfect for cold snowy days like today.

The Constanza is a one of a kind beer, crafted by assistant brewer Colin Farrell. A medium bodied amber ale brewed with lots of spicy rye and aged on caraway seeds. The closest thing to rye bread in a glass. Pairs wonderfully with pastrami, “ the most sensual of the cured meats”.

Hope to see you soon

Cheers, Paul and Colin-Iron hill brewmasters, Lancaster, PA

Trazzler Weekly Recommendation

TranduceTrazzler Weekly Recommendation - Tasting Beer From an Organoleptic Hopr in Milton, Delaware
This is what was recommended for me....sounds like just what the doctor ordered.. avigate the stainless steel tanks and super heady smell of hops during a Dogfish Head Brewery tour in Milton, Delaware. Stick with the theme when you're done and head to the nearby Rehoboth Beach brewpub for the cheap beers and sublime grub. On Mondays and Fridays, be there when the bartender pulls out the Randall filter, a three-foot tall hops-leaf filled cylinder attached to a keg of signature 90-minute IPA. The high alcohol content in the suds grabs oils from the hops on its way to the tap faucet and produces a pungently fresh beer.

Eastern Market in the winter ?

All your favorite "Eastern Market All-Star Vendors" will be there!
(yes, they will be signing autographs)
PLUS, a campfire with marshmallows in the parking lot. Bundle up the kids, animals, and yourself and pop on over to celebrate the new year in Eastern Market Style.

What's in season?

Available at market is Saturday will be Beef, Pork and Lamb, including pork chops and sausage. Assorted fresh greens, potatoes and sweet potatoes will also be available from Lime Valley Mill.

Hamid Hamid will have a variety of fruits and vegetables for sale as well as his wife Nowal's famous falafel.

The Fed will be featuring a variety of seasonal produce selections grown in his Salunga fields.

Lest we forget Eteyhu Zenebe and her wonderful organic Ethiopian dishes to warm ourselves on the chilly day!

Was Beer the Basis for Civilization

Brewing Up a Civilization
By Frank Thadeusz
Did our Neolithic ancestors turn to agriculture so that they could be sure of a tipple? US Archaeologist Patrick McGovern thinks so. The expert on identifying traces of alcohol in prehistoric sites reckons the thirst for a brew was enough of an incentive to start growing crops.
It turns out the fall of man probably didn't begin with an apple. More likely, it was a handful of mushy figs that first led humankind astray.

Here is how the story likely began -- a prehistoric human picked up some dropped fruit from the ground and popped it unsuspectingly into his or her mouth. The first effect was nothing more than an agreeably bittersweet flavor spreading across the palate. But as alcohol entered the bloodstream, the brain started sending out a new message -- whatever that was, I want more of it! Humankind's first encounters with alcohol in the form of fermented fruit probably occurred in just such an accidental fashion. But once they were familiar with the effect, archaeologist Patrick McGovern believes, humans stopped at nothing in their pursuit of frequent intoxication.
A secure supply of alcohol appears to have been part of the human community's basic requirements much earlier than was long believed. As early as around 9,000 years ago, long before the invention of the wheel, inhabitants of the Neolithic village Jiahu in China were brewing a type of mead with an alcohol content of 10 percent, McGovern discovered recently.
McGovern analyzed clay shards found during excavations in China's Yellow River Valley at his Biomolecular Archaeology Laboratory for Cuisine, Fermented Beverages, and Health at the University of Pennsylvania Museum.

The bearded archaeologist is recognized around the world as an expert when it comes to identifying traces of alcoholic drinks on prehistoric finds. He ran so-called liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry on the clay remnants from Asia and found traces of tartaric acid -- one of the main acids present in wine -- and beeswax in the shards' pores. It appears that prehistoric humans in China combined fruit and honey into an intoxicating brew. To read more click this link:

Kell on Earth Bravo 2/1/2010

From
The Dish....
Welcome to "Kell on Earth"
Bravo's newest docu-series follows fashion PR guru Kelly Cutrone. .....
Bravo's newest docu-series is about to give you an inside look at the cutthroat world of fashion, starring none other than the woman at the center of it all, Kelly Cutrone. Get ready to enter "Kell on Earth," premiering February 1st at 10pm.
Cutrone has been called one of the "coolest, most intimidating persons ever," and, judging from her frank demeanor and fashion world credibility, it's easy to see why. Bravo takes a no holds barred look into the life of one of America's most legitimate tastemakers as she balances running her wildly successful fashion PR company, People's Revolution, juggling Fashion Weeks in New York and London, with being a single mother and one of New York's most notable women about town.
Founder of the powerhouse PR firm People's Revolution, Cutrone is a major player in the fashion world. A notable New Yorker and a force to be reckoned with, Cutrone lives a fast-paced, whirlwind life juggling her business in a tough economic climate, organizing major fashion shows across the world, and managing the everyday hectic pace of People's Revolution. Somewhere in between she manages to make time for her personal life, which includes being a proud single mom to daughter Ava, and writing her first book "If You Have To Cry, Go Outside."

From Gawker..

Fashion PR dragonlady Kelly Cutrone has inked a book deal with HarperOne. The impending tome will be "a real girl's guide to the real fucking world." OK!
Incidentally, the New York Observer's Eight-Day Week columnist Meredith Bryan, who met Cutrone after writing a flattering profile last year, is co-writing the book. So there's that lesson right on the cover.
Cutrone, who has risen to prominence as the owner of People's Revolution, a company that organizes fashion shows and stuff, but more significantly as a frequent mentor/berater on MTV's twin-moon docusoaps, The Hills and The City. On those shows she's given scary, sober advice to stars Lauren and Whitney, who both nodded gravely while trying not to pee themselves.

Holiday Honors

Wreaths Across America, a non profit 501-c3 organization, was formed as an extension of the Arlington Wreath Project. The Arlington Wreath program was started by Morrill Worcester (Worcester Wreath) in 1992 with the donation and laying of 5000 Christmas wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. This became an annual journey for Mr. Worcester. Read more about this in the History of Arlington. It was relatively obscure until 2005 when a photo of the stones adorned with wreaths and covered in snow circulated around the internet. The project received National attention. Thousands of requests poured in from all over the country from people wanting to emulate the Arlington project at their National and State cemeteries spurred the creation of “Wreaths Across America”. Unable to donate thousands of wreaths to each state, Mr. Worcester conceived the idea of sending 7 wreaths (one for each branch of the military as well as POW/MIA). In 2006 with the help of the CAP and other civic organizations, over 150 locations held wreath laying ceremonies simultaneously.
The Patriot Guard Riders volunteered as escort for the wreaths going to Arlington. This began the annual “Veterans Honor Parade” that travels the east coast in early December. To read more and donate please check out this link: http://www.wreathsacrossamerica.org/

My Love for Pink Martini

Pink Martini: A Tale Of Two Songs‏ from NPR music notes
October 27, 2009 - The band Pink Martini draws its influences from a wide variety of places and music genres, which its members credit in part to their international audience.
For its latest record, Splendor in the Grass, the Portland-based band found inspiration for two of its songs from an unlikely place: a sheet of music left on band member Thomas Lauderdale's piano. Lauderdale, the band's pianist, had a copy of Franz Schubert's "Fantasy in F Minor for Piano Four-Hands" out when he was working with one of Pink Martini's producers.
And Then You're Gone
The two started playing with the song, added a Latin beat and incorporated elements that were, according to Lauderdale, "somewhere between 'I Will Survive,' Shirley Bassey and Schubert, and the tango." The track described the plight of a woman who was once head-over-heels for a smooth-talking lover who disappears one day. As the song progressed, Lauderdale and his producer found themselves coming back to a single phrase that would become the song's title: "And Then You're Gone."
After a little tinkering, the song was presented to the band. At a rehearsal, it wasn't received as well as Lauderdale had hoped.
"The day we introduced this song to the band, nobody was happy," he says.
Pink Martini lead singer China Forbes adds, "It was long and repetitive."
But Now I'm Back
So Lauderdale went back to the drawing board, attempting to salvage the song by trimming it and adding a swing feel.
"Suddenly," he says, "we had not one, but two songs. So, you know, if you think this is repetitive ... try this!"
The second song became a defiant response from the disappearing lover: "But Now I'm Back."
For the part of the lothario, Pink Martini turned to an old friend with a voice familiar to NPR listeners: justice correspondent and frequent Morning Edition guest host Ari Shapiro. Shapiro's inclusion on the album was the result of a fortuitous dinner party he'd held when the band was in Washington, D.C. After dinner, partygoers crowded around the piano to participate in an impromptu singalong. The next day, while sitting at his desk, Shapiro got a call from Lauderdale asking if he'd like to sing on the new album.
Harebrained Ideas
Shapiro says he had his doubts.
"I say this with love," Shapiro says, "but Thomas tends to sort of come up with cockamamie, harebrained ideas that could never actually take place, that somehow he manages to make happen."
In this case, Lauderdale's idea did happen: Shapiro makes a guest appearance on Pink Martini's album. Adding to the tale of an NPR correspondent turned singer, Shapiro performed "But Now I'm Back" with the band at the Hollywood Bowl back in September.
The story of these two songs is one of arranging and rearranging, an eclectic mix of musical styles and a chance singalong. It's a story that illustrates well what Pink Martini does as a group, and particularly what Lauderdale does when he convinces a reporter that he ought to sing. Still, Lauderdale says he doesn't consider himself a songwriter.
"China's really more of a songwriter than I am," he says. "My urge is to just practice Schubert and become better."
Forbes says she sees what Lauderdale does as more akin to the work of a composer.
"It's like a tableau," she says, "and Thomas is actually moving the figurines around."
In a fashion that's both playful and typical of Pink Martini, Lauderdale chimes in: "Isn't that just more like set decorator?"

fall back and check batteries

Time check-fall back~ time for daylight savings time...........&
Don't Forget to Replace Smoke and CO Alarm Batteries This Weekend as Daylight Saving Time Ends
Each year, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) sponsors a campaign to help keep household smoke alarms working: Change Your Clock/Change Your Battery(tm). According to the Home Safety Council, 97% of American homes have at least one smoke alarm installed, but less than one in five tests the alarms at least quarterly. Safety experts recommend testing home smoke alarms monthly and replacing the batteries once a year or when they chirp, signaling low battery power. When you reset your clocks on Saturday night to "fall back," replace the batteries in all your smoke and CO alarms, and then hold a family fire drill. For information on how to change smoke detector batteries and other basics, click on the following link:http://www.ehow.com/how-does_4780147_replacing-smoke-detector-batteries.html

Sugar

I just watched SUGAR last night thru netflix. I really liked it and it reminded me of my trip to the DR last May. All the resort men loved my Phillie's baseball cap. I took it just because I knew it would spark conversations with the locals and it did. I met a former player, at my resort, who played for a St. Louis Cardinals farm team. Here is an article about it from the NY Times:

sinus infection again

I have another sinus infection. Instead of waiting and trying to get an appt. at the VA in 5 weeks I instead went to a CVS minute clinic by my work-King of Prussia. It was one of the best medical appointments I ever had. I am taking an antibiotic Amoxicillin 875 mg for ten days 2 x a day. I got my flu shot also at the minute clinic because it was faster and convenient. Here's my tip of the hat to you MINUTE Clinic.
Yes, the pills are huge-horse pills as I like to call them but due to my other health problems any form of infection is bad and dangerous news. Remember West Wing? When Martin Sheen as the Pres. came down with the FLU?

West beat East last night in Football but more importantly for Tenpints is the news out of Victory Brews...
YAKIMA TWILIGHT
ABOUT-The tenacious grip of big, juicy hop aroma and character slides smoothly into rich, dark malts. This heavyweight battle between fresh, Yakima Valley hops and dark, roasted malts is resolved harmoniously as the flavors merge to deliver complex satisfaction with a warming edge. Enjoy the ‘twilight’ for the bright and brassy hops!
COMPOSITION-Hops: Four whole flower Yakima Valley hops. Malts: imported, German malts....ABV: 8.7%
AVAILABILITY-Draft and bottles, November through January.
From the Victory news email I received: With the January 2009 move of our popular winter seasonal ale, Hop Wallop, to our full time portfolio of beers, there was a need for a new winter seasonal. Yakima Twilight fills that void left by Hop Wallop. You may recall that it was first offered on draft here at Victory in the autumn of 2008. From that experience, Yakima Twilight proved popular with Victory loyalists.

Douglas Coupland Generation A

I love Douglas Coupland and I just found out a new book is in the works....Generation A...
Generation A is set in the near future in a world where bees are extinct, until five unconnected people from around the world -- in the United States, Canada, France, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka -- are all stung. Their shared experience unites them in ways they never could have imagined.
Generation A mirrors Coupland's debut novel, 1991's Generation X. It explores new ways of storytelling in a digital world. Like much of Coupland's writing, it occupies the perplexing hinterland between optimism about the future and everyday apocalyptic paranoia. Imaginative, inventive, and fantastically entertaining, Generation A is his most ambitious work to date.

I am unsure of when it will be published but 11/10/09 could be a possibility.

YUM cooking with suds,

Cooking with suds
Beer is more than a beverage ...

From the Lancasteronline article that appeared in the THE SUNDAY NEWS By MICHAEL C. UPTON, Correspondent

------------------------

For years, inventive cooks have been trying to marry food with drink. The expansion of the micro- and craft-brew market has opened the eyes — and taste buds — of the thirsty and hungry. Sure, foodies have been using beer as a recipe ingredient for some time. But the days of beer-butt chicken on the grill or just sloshing a Budweiser over sizzling burgers are in the past.In the multicultural metropolis of Toronto, two chefs have taken their desire for cooking with beer to a new level. Brian Morin and Stephen Beaumont opened beerbistro, "a place where the kitchen would make full use of all the world's great ales and lagers." The restaurant — never to be confused with a pub — has its own tome, "The beerbistro Cookbook" (Key Porter Books, $40). Morin, before jetting off on vacation, agreed to share two recipes with Sunday News readers that would bookend creations from two Lancaster-based chefs: Eric Howton, of Effie Ophelia, and Russ Skiles, of Lancaster Brewing Company. Some consider the "beerbistro Cookbook" the quintessential work for fine cooking with beer. Morin and Beaumont have compiled beer recipes that range from pumpkin ice cream to duck confit corn dogs. Spring House Beer NEWS

HAPPY SMOKETOBER!

Spring House brewing is pleased to announced the release of the Smoked Porter for this Friday, (yesterday)! Stop by for a fill of the most talked about offering of the season. Prior to brewing our Smoked Porter, Matt selects specialty malts to be smoked over an open flame, imparting a unique flavor profile in the porter. The malts are smoked using apple and hickory wood for a full 72 hours. Spring House Brewing Co. chose to smoke the grain in a local smoke house that dates back to the late 19th century. This one-of-a-kind smoke house imparts layers of smokey depth to the beer that cannot be replicated. Enjoy!
