Questions -questions-questions someone needs to ask Sarah Palin

Questions like:
§ Suppose your 14-year-old daughter Willow is brutally raped in her bedroom by an intruder. She becomes pregnant and wants an abortion. Could you tell the parents of America why you think your child and their children should be forced by law to have their rapists' babies?
§ You say you don't believe global warming is man-made. Could you tell us what scientists you've spoken with or read who have led you to that conclusion? What do you think the 2,500 scientists of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are getting wrong?
§ If you didn't try to fire Wasilla librarian Mary Ellen Baker over her refusal to consider censoring books, why did you try to fire her?
§ What is the European Union, and how does it function?
§ Forty-seven million Americans lack health insurance. John Goodman, who has advised McCain on healthcare, has proposed redefining them as covered because, he says, anyone can get care at an ER. Do you agree with him?
§ What is the function of the Federal Reserve?
§ Cindy and John McCain say you have experience in foreign affairs because Alaska is next to Russia. When did you last speak with Prime Minister Putin, and what did you talk about?
§ Approximately how old is the earth? Five thousand years? 10,000? 5 billion?
§ You are a big fan of President Bush, so why didn't you mention him even once in your convention speech?
§ McCain says cutting earmarks and waste will make up for revenues lost by making the tax cuts permanent. Experts say that won't wash. Balancing the Bush tax cuts plus new ones proposed by McCain would most likely mean cutting Medicare, Medicaid or Social Security. Which would you cut?
§ You're suing the federal government to have polar bears removed from the endangered species list, even as Alaska's northern coastal ice is melting and falling into the sea. Can you explain the science behind your decision?
§ You've suggested that God approves of the Iraq War and the Alaska pipeline. How do you know?

These questions were from katha Pollitt's column called Lipstick on a wing nut from the Sept. 29th 2008 issue of The Nation.

shedding some light on McNasty McCain

Here is an excerpt of an article that appeared in THE NATION By JoAnn Wypijewski in Sept.29 2008 issue.....
At 42 McNasty, as he was called in high school, took up with 24-year-old Cindy, a former junior rodeo queen, and, having boosted his image and his net worth via a marriage vow, soon reverted to the pattern of insults and macho egotism that has typified most of his life. He denigrated her education at USC as a tour through "the University of Spoiled Children." For all but one of several miscarriages, he left her on her own. When she was popping ten to fifteen pills a day to mask her pain and "do everything he wanted," he never noticed. In 1992, in a rage over her gentle teasing about his thinning hair, he exploded, "At least I don't plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you cunt," a one-two punch hurled in front of three journalists and two aides but unreported until recently, by Cliff Schecter in The Real McCain!!!
On the campaign trail in June he joked about "beating my wife" and took umbrage when others failed to grasp the simple good fun in the remark. In early August he said he'd encouraged Cindy to enter the Miss Buffalo Chip beauty pageant at the high-revving, flesh-swinging biker rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. It might have been a fine quip except that up on the stage with her daughter Meghan, staring out toward the throng where a sign urged Show Ur Tits 4 McCain, Cindy had the thin, fixed smile of endurance, not joy. Just before the Palin pick, Mrs. McCain was so brittle that a supporter's energetic handshake put her in a cast.

Please read the rest of it here=http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080929/wypijewski

McNasty would not even look at Senator Obama during the debate last night nor would he look out at the camera into the televised usa land where the good ole citizens were sitting around waiting for our next leader because we are really in a big shithole and we need a leader! Pronto!

Wasilla Watch-Sarah Palin and making the victims pay

Editorial Observer by Dorothy Samuels in the New York Times....9/25/08
Wasilla Watch: Sarah Palin and the Rape Kits -
Assault victims in Wasilla, Alaska, were being billed for the cost of rape kits and forensic exams while Sarah Palin was mayor. Even in tough budget times, there are lines that cannot be crossed. So I was startled by this tidbit reported recently by The Associated Press: When Sarah Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, the small town began billing sexual-assault victims for the cost of rape kits and forensic exams.
Ms. Palin owes voters an explanation.(!!!!!) What was the thinking behind cutting the measly few thousand dollars needed to cover the yearly cost of swabs, specimen containers and medical tests? Whose dumb idea was it to make assault victims and their insurance companies pay instead? Unfortunately, her campaign is shielding the candidate from the press, so Americans may still be waiting for answers on Election Day. PLEASE READ THE REST OF THE ARTICLE!

Local Fashion Plate (fandm) in NYTimes Magazine

Imagine my surprise as I finally had time to read the New York Times magazine from Sunday, yesterday. It was the TEACHING issue. In the magazine's style section called 'Class Acts' there are photos of Professors who are making academia look good....and guess who was spotlighted, a professor from Franklin and Marshall College, it was none other than Annalisa Crannell, a professor of mathematics at F&M college, right here in Lancaster City! The short paragraph notes that she tries to get her students to explain mathematics to a nontechnical audience using real world and fictional examples. She was pictured in a Proenza Schouler coat, Dries Van Noten dress and necklace; Marni belt. Check it out page, 90. Check out the link and slide show:http://www.nytimes.com/slideshow/2008/09/16/magazine/20080921-STYLE_index.html

More thoughts on DFW

I have been thinking a lot about David Foster Wallace, still. I just read A.O. Scott's article in the Sunday New York Times last night. Here is the link:http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/21/weekinreview/21scott.html

I love the last paragraph:

Outside of graduate classrooms, not many readers swallow the “Cantos” whole, and a similar fate may lie in store for “Infinite Jest.” Mr. Wallace is likely to remain available to general readers in the smaller, less daunting doses of his stories and journalism. He will also survive as an ally and an influence, a link between the giants who inspired and enraged him and whoever comes next. But he will be terribly missed by those of us who were lost with him in the maze of self-consciousness and self-doubt that defined our peculiar destiny. He illuminated the maze brilliantly, even if he couldn’t show us the way out.

Matt Millen finally FIRED! He is Out of There.

Allen Park, MI (Sports Network) - Matt Millen has been relieved of his duties as president and CEO of the Detroit Lions. !!!!!!
Lions owner and chairman William Clay Ford made the announcement Wednesday.
"I believe that this decision is in the best interest of this organization," said Ford. "I appreciate Matt's efforts. Matt worked tirelessly during his tenure to win, and he would be the first one to tell you that you have to win in this league. It just didn't work out."
Millen had been in charge of the Lions since 2001. The team has produced an NFL-worst record of just 31-84 in that time, including 0-3 this season.
Detroit has been outscored 113-59 in three losses this season heading into this week's bye.
"I am very disappointed with where we are as a team after our start this season," Ford added. "Our sole focus now is preparing for our next game against Chicago. The entire organization must work together and do whatever we can to make this a successful season. Despite our record, it is still early and there is time to turn this season around."
"These decisions are for the duration of the 2008 season," Ford concluded. "Once the season is over, we will undergo a thorough and comprehensive evaluation of our entire football operation and put together a plan that we believe will transform this team into a winner."
The move comes just days after Bill Ford Jr., the son of William Clay Ford, stated publicly he would have fired Millen if the decision were his.
The Lions were in postseason contention last year after opening the campaign with a record of 6-2, but they stumbled to seven losses in their last eight games to finish 7-9 -- still the best record in Millen's tenure.
I have never ever been a fan of Matt Millen's and my dislike goes back a long long way.

Matt Taibbi does it again!

In the current Rolling Stone Magazine, National Affairs column, MATT TAIBBI writes on MAD DOG PALIN, "the scariest thing about John McCain's running mate isn't how unqualified she is-it's what her candidacy says about America." Heck isn't that the freakin' truth!

"The great insight of the Palin VP choice is that huge chunks of American voters no longer even demand that their candidates actually have policy positions; they simply consume them as media entertainment, rooting for or against them according to the reflexive prejudices of their demographic, as they would for reality-show contestants or sitcom characters. Hicks root for hicks, moms for moms, born-agains for born-agains. Sure, there was politics in the Palin speech, but it was all either silly lies or merely incidental fluffery buttressing the theatrical performance. A classic example of what was at work here came when Palin proudly introduced her Down-syndrome baby, Trig, then stared into the camera and somberly promised parents of special-needs kids that they would ‘have a friend and advocate in the White House.’ This was about a half-hour before she raised her hands in triumph with McCain, a man who voted against increasing funding for special needs education.”

Another Store added to College Row

I had posted earlier that more businesses are going to open on Harrisburg Pike, known as College Row and now another store has announced that it is going to open also. European Eyeware, formerly Olde Town Opticians on Duke Street is moving in. For Lancaster County on the east side...Lancaster News Era (By TIM MEKEEL, Staff)reported that the vacant Kemps Foods complex is about to be razed to make way for a Lowe's, a Best Buy and two more businesses. Completion of the $30 million project on Hempstead Road, near Route 30 and next to Costco, is scheduled for mid-2009. "We've got a lot of work to do," said Lowe's spokeswoman Chris Ahearn. Demolition of the former dairy, which closed three years ago, is set to begin in one to two weeks. The razing is expected to take four to six weeks. I heard about this project about a year ago and was wondering about what as going on.

September 30th-Little Women

On september 30th in 1868, the first volumn of Lousie May Alcott's "Little Women" was publish. Now go visit your local library and check it out.
From Wiki...Little Women, or, Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy is a novel by American author Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888). Written and published in two parts in 1868 and 1869, the novel follows the lives of four sisters—Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy March—and is loosely based on the author's childhood experiences with her three sisters. The first part of the book was an immediate commercial and critical success and prompted the composition of the book's second part, also a huge success. Both parts were first published as a single volume in 1880. The book is an unquestioned American classic. Alcott followed Little Women with two sequels reprising the March sisters, Little Men (1871) and Jo's Boys (1886). Little Women has been adapted to play, musical, opera, film, and animated feature.

Check out the official Talk Like A Pirate Day Web site. I have included the link below!
In the six years since Dave Barry mentioned the group in his blog, what once was a goofy idea celebrated by a handful of friends has turned into an international phenomenon that shows no sign of letting up. Or maybe you just stumbled on to our site while googling around for sites your mother probably wouldn't approve of. Or perhaps you're one of the millions of people from South Africa to the South Pole, from New York to the Pacific Northwest, who've made it your own personal excuse to party like pirates every September 19th (and sometimes for days after)!
However you got here, stick around an' learn all about September 19 - International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Talk Like A Pirate Day 2008!!!!

Brewfest in lancaster, PA =MOOSE EVENTS

Brews & Bands will be held under a dome on October 11, 2008. Sample a variety of beers from local breweries. Get your groove on with live bands. Must be 21 + to attend this event. 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. - 1st beer session http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/433599:00 p.m. - Midnight - 2nd beer session.http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/43361
In 2006, Mayor J. Richard Gray formed the Mayor's Office of Special Events as a non-profit organization. MOOSE's mission is about producing special events and serving as a resource for others planning events. At the center of all it discussions, partnerships, decisions and actions is its core purpose - creating excitement and enthusiasm for the City of Lancaster.
One of the most expedient ways to accomplish this is to think "gathering" - social gatherings. Gatherings to bring people together not just to enjoy "the event" but to enjoy one another; to participate in the sense of camaraderie; to meet new people; to get to know their neighbors.
In short, MOOSE is looking for that next best party where people can work collectively to create a gathering of neighbors, visitors, acquaintances, and guests to enjoy the event and one another.

I told you....it's Alice in the spin off!!

From the afterellen web site: BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE! In case you missed it, Leisha Hailey's Alice will be the star of the upcoming L Word spinoff.
That is who I was rooting for!
Ilene Chaiken, creator and exec producer of The L Word, will write and produce the pilot, which will shoot in December.

The Bechdel Rule

From the afterellen web site: Out cartoonist Alison Bechdel appeared on NPR's All Things Considered this week to talk about her famous Bechdel Rule, and how it applies to this fall's television lineup.
"The Rule" first appeared in Bechdel's strip Dykes to Watch Out For in 1985. It details the three criteria a movie has to meet before she'll watch it: 1) It has to have at least two women in it, who 2) talk to each other about 3) something that isn’t a man.
I like the Bechdel Rule and will now apply it to my life and tv/film watching...
Alison Bechdel's Dykes to Watch Out For is on hiatus while she finishes her graphic novel Love Life, which is due out in 2009. Her father went to F&M in Lancaster, PA and her family life was featured in her book "FUN HOUSE".

Susan Sontag's journal and notebooks....

I'm looking forward to this book being published this fall (12/9/08):
Reborn: Journals and Notebooks, 1947-1963 (Hardcover)by Susan Sontag (Author), David Rieff (Editor) . “What ultimately matters about Sontag . . . is what she has defended: the life of the mind, and the necessity for reading and writing as ‘a way of being fully human.’” —Hilary Mantel, Los Angeles Times Book Review

How the Va Abandons our VETS

Please read this article in the NATION's Sept. 15, 208 issue. It was written by Joshua Kors.
Research support was provided by the Puffin Foundation Investigative Fund at The Nation Institute. ...Sgt. Juan Jimenez had one of the most dangerous jobs in Iraq, ushering top Administration officials through the war-torn streets of Baghdad. He returned home with two Purple Hearts and shrapnel lodged in his right arm. Today he is gravely ill. What Jimenez didn't realize is that before he could receive benefits for his wounds, he'd have to prove that those wounds came from war. Three and a half years later, the sergeant is still making his case. The Department of Veterans Affairs isn't convinced. And it won't give him his benefits until it is. NEW STORES COMING TO COLLEGE ROW, LANCASTER PA

New stores are coming to the empty spaces along College Row on Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, PA. I was looking forward to the Kimberton Whole Foods Store opening soon but now it has been announced that the project is on hold. What gives? Hopefully a Trader Joes will open up?
The Sunday News announced that a new store called Azura Clothing will open and a WOW Cafe & Wingery, a sports themed national chain, who is seeking a liquor license will fill some of the empty spaces. I haven't been to Iron Hill Brewery since the College kids (F&Mer's) came back to town so I need to head over to the West Side of town soon and check on this.
