Magazine Recycling

If you live in Lancaster City and get a lot of magazines like I do you maybe a little frustrated as I have been that we can not recycle magazines curbside. I used to recycle them at a church on Oregon Pike but that closed. I now found (well sweet t found it) that you can take your magazines to Penn Cinema and in the back of the cinema is a Ronald McDonald's magazine recycle center.

District 9

I really enjoyed the film-District 9. Very intense and interesting. The film's marketing campaign was also cool. I would like to see a sequel called District 10-set 3 years in the future when Chris and his son (aliens-prawns) come back. This photo was taken inside Penn Cinema and it is a little too dark but hopefully you get the idea.

plum island DHS foot and mouth disease yikeees

DHS Plum Island Lab Foot-Mouth-Disease SNAFU July 31, 2009 (Updated)

Here is a little bit about the history of PLUM ISLAND from Wiki there's more info if you want to read about it...... if you hit the link above.....

In response to disease outbreaks in Mexico and Canada in 1954, the Army gave the island to the Agriculture Department to establish a research center dedicated to the study of foot and mouth disease in cattle.[1]
The island was opened to news media for the first time in 1992.[2] In 1995, the Department of Agriculture was issued a $111,000 fine for storing hazardous chemicals on the island.[2]
Local Long Island activists prevented the center from expanding to include diseases that affect humans in 2000, which would require a Biosafety Level 4 designation; in 2002, Congress again considered the plan.[1]
The Wall Street Journal reported in January 2002 that many scientists and government officials wanted the lab to close, believing that the threat of foot and mouth disease was so remote that the center did not merit its $16.5 million annual budget.[1] In 2002, the Plum Island Animal Disease Center was transferred from the United States Department of Agriculture to the United States Department of Homeland Security.
In 2003, a whistleblower who voiced concerns about safety at the facility was fired by the contractor he worked for. He had discussed his concerns with aides to Senator Hillary Clinton.[4] A National Labor Relations Board judge found that the contractor, North Fork Services, had discriminated against the whistleblower.[4]

Julia Julie Julie Julia

Can't get enough of the Julie & Julia movie and don't feel like reading the books that helped make the film then check out the new issue of Wine Spectator. There is a large section about Julia Child's Life and Legacy. Tributes by Jacques Pepin, Emeril Lagasse, Thomas Keller and more. Today is Julia Child's birthday! I actually know another Julie Child and it is her birthday too. Funny this thing called life.

DISTRICT 9

Fascinated by the BIG MOVE-TMI

For some reason I am fascinated by this big move and I love the maps that have been in the 'paper' . The 'paper' being the mess that is 'Intelligencer Journal ** Lancaster New Era'. Here is some background that the paper published by P.J. Reilly.....on 08/13/2009...

***Two giant steam generators destined for Three Mile Island are expected to begin their long journey from France any day now.
The cargo ship carrying the generators for the Unit 1 reactor at the TMI nuclear power plant are expected to glide through the mouth of the Susquehanna River to a shipyard in Port Deposit, Md., during the first week of September.
Within five days after the 74-foot-long, 510-ton behemoths are transferred from a barge to custom-made, 26-axle, 315-ton transport platforms, they are expected to roll into Lancaster County on Route 272 in Little Britain Township.
Over the following two weeks, they will traverse the entire length of the county.
"This is all going to start happening very soon," said Denise Woernle, spokeswoman for AREVA Inc., the France-based company that built the generators. "I'm sure there's going to be a lot of interest in it."
Exelon Nuclear, the operator of TMI, is paying $280 million to replace two steam generators inside the plant's Unit 1 reactor.
The generators are large cylinders full of pipes, which serve as heat exchangers. Super-heated water created inside the pressurized-water reactor at TMI enters one side of the unit and the heat is transferred to adjacent pipes, turning water into steam to turn the turbine that produces electricity.
Built at AREVA's manufacturing plant near Dijon, France, the generators' 70-mile journey from Port Deposit, through Lancaster County, to TMI is a massive undertaking that will necessitate rolling road blocks, the construction of at least three temporary road and stream crossings, the trimming of trees and the temporary lowering of utility wires, poles and traffic signals.
AREVA is working with state Department of Transportation and the state Department of Environmental Protection to secure permits that will allow the company to transport the heavy generators on public roads and across streams.
Woernle said AREVA expects those permits to be awarded about a week before the generators enter Pennsylvania.
Technically, she said, the company's planned travel route is considered tentative until the permits are awarded, but, at this time, AREVA is moving ahead as if the proposed route has been approved.
"We are not expecting the state to change anything at this point," she said.
AREVA is planning to notify businesses and residents along the route over the next three weeks.
"Obviously, we want them to be aware that the generators are coming and let them know about when they might be in their area," Woernle said.
The remote-controlled transports that will haul the generators move at a top speed of 3 mph.
AREVA expects about 200 people to travel with the generators in a convoy that likely will stretch a mile long.
On two-lane roads, traffic will be blocked in both directions as the generators creep along.
When the convoy is on a four-lane section of Route 272, traffic will be blocked only on the side of the highway on which the convoy is traveling. For the most part, that means the northbound lanes will be closed.
However, when the convoy approaches the tunnels in Providence Township, the generators will be steered to the southbound lanes because that tunnel is taller than the northbound one.
Once the generators pass through the tunnel, they will be steered back to the northbound lanes.
The generators will be parked at various locations along the route each night. They only will be moved during daylight hours.
Also, Woernle said, they will not be moved on weekends.
Inclement weather will only hinder the convoy's journey if there is lightning or flooding.
AREVA plans to establish a tracking system on its Web site — www.us.areva-np.com/tmisteamgenerator — that will allow people to follow the convoy's progress.

Lancaster's own in Taking Woodstock

Lancaster's own Jonathan Groff was tapped to play Woodstock organizer Michael Lang in acclaimed director Ang Lee's new movie, Taking Woodstock. Filming began in late August 2008, and the movie is set for release on August 2009 release. It will be released after the anniversary of woodstock.

One of the industry’s brightest new stars, Jonathan Groff makes his film debut in Taking Woodstock.
He starred as Melchior Gabor in the Tony Award-winning musical Spring Awakening, directed by Michael Mayer, with music by Duncan Sheik and book & lyrics by Steven Sater. Mr. Groff originated the role off-Broadway with the Atlantic Theater Company before reprising it on Broadway, earning a Theatre World Award as well as Drama Desk, Drama League, and Tony Award nominations.
He then took on the famed role of Claude Hooper Bukowski in The Public Theater’s hit revival of the ‘60s rock musical Hair, produced as part of their annual “Shakespeare in the Park” summer series.
Immediately after filming Taking Woodstock, Mr. Groff returned to the off-Broadway stage (Playwrights Horizons) in Craig Lucas’ contemporary family drama Prayer for My Enemy, starring opposite Victoria Clark and Michele Pawk, and directed by Bartlett Sher. He then returned to The Public Theater in the New York premiere of Mr. Lucas’ play The Singing Forest, opposite Olympia Dukakis for director Mark Wing-Davey.
The Pennsylvania native’s other stage work includes the Broadway musical In My Life and regional tours of The Sound of Music, Fame, Bat Boy, and Honk!
For television, Mr. Groff had a recurring role in 2007 on the serial One Life to Live;and starred with Joseph Fiennes, Carrie-Anne Moss, Blythe Danner, and Robert Wagner in Ryan Murphy’s cable series pilot Pretty/Handsome.

The Believer and 2 Beths

Even though I am not getting paid I was able to do some shopping last week at Borders. I bought THE BELIEVER 2009 music issue. Inside were some great treats, a new cd, a great article by Michelle Tea on Beth Ditto and Gossip. On the cd was a new tune by Lancaster's own Beth Sorrentino. I used to live in the same apartment building with her brother Jay. We spent 9/11 together worried about Beth living in NYC close to the Towers. Jay and I have lost touch since. Here is the wiki entry for Beth. Please do yourself a favor and get this issue of the BELIEVER. Great reading and great listening!!

Beth Sorrentino (born Elizabeth Sorrentino) is an American pianist and singer-songwriter from Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
In the early 1990s, Sorrentino, bassist Ken Heitmueller, and Beth's brother, drummer Jay Sorrentino, formed the music trio Suddenly, Tammy!. The band got signed to spinART Records, which released several EPs (Spokesmodel, El Presidente) and a self-titled debut album. The band subsequently signed a contract with Warner Bros. Records, for whom they recorded and released the album We Get There When We Do. A follow-up album, Comet, was recorded and reportedly completed, but the band was dropped from the label before it could be released. Warners shelved the project, and it has never been made commercially available. The group disbanded shortly thereafter.
Following the band's split in 1997, Beth moved to New York City and became a music teacher.
Sorrentino recorded a series of demos between 2002-2003, produced by Irwin Chusid and engineered by Peter Katis at Tarquin Studios, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. The material mostly consisted of new original compositions, with cover versions of two Leonard Cohen songs. After sporadic returns to public performance in New York clubs, Sorrentino approved the demos for digital release in 2006 under the title Nine Songs, One Story. In 2008, two live solo sessions performed and recorded in 2001 at radio station WFMU were released digitally. These sets included a number of Suddenly, Tammy! songs, as well as new original material

Not all PA state Workers have been PAID

Not All State Employees to be Paid - Yet

I love how almost all media outlets have stated repeating that state workers are now being paid and receiving paychecks. NOT TRUE. Why doesn't media people do they're homework? They are getting paid to work-right?
All state employees will not be paid as a result of the interim budget signed by the governor this past week. Some state employees (hello like ME) will need special appropriations passed in order to receive their wages. These are the independents and they are listed below.

These Bills (listed below) were voted in the House today and they all passed. Next they will go to the Senate. The Senate returns Monday, 8/10/09. Return from where you may be thinking-vacation yes VACATION, or how the senate likes to call it recess. If the Senate votes for the Bills, and we expect them to do that, the Bills will go to the governor on Tuesday or Wednesday of next week.
I received an email/letter from the Governor stating he plans on signing the bills to pay us immediately.
There are approximately 1600 employees affected by the eight Bills listed below, and of that number, about 500 are AFSCME represented (me). If the governor signs these Bills on Tuesday (Wednesday), the employees will be paid within about 5 days, according to the information I have (union) been provided. This means they would be paid later than the state employees, under the governor’s jurisdiction.

Special Funds Bills

1. Public School Employees’ Retirement Fund – House Bill 1419 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); Bluebacks delivered Senate (DO 3041)
2. State Employees’ Retirement Fund -- House Bill 1420 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); bluebacks delivered to Senate (DO 3034)
3. Bureau of Professional & Occupational Affairs- House Bill 1421 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); Bluebacks delivered to Senate (DO 3047) 9ME)
4. Workmen’s Compensation Administration Fund-House Bill 1422 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); Bluebacks delivered Senate (DO 3033)
5. Public Utility Commission – House Bill 1423 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); Bluebacks delivered Senate (DO 3049)
6. Consumer Advocate – House Bill 1424 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); Bluebacks delivered Senate (DO 3032)
7. Small Business Advocate – House Bill 1425 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations); Bluebacks delivered Senate (DO 3045)
8. Gaming Board/PSP/Revenue/Attorney General – House Bill 1663 (Voted favorably from House Appropriations) (note: Gaming Board Budget higher than Governor’s number); Bluebacks delivered to Senate (DO3027)

Part of this posting is from the AFSCME 13 union web site. I am not sure what bluebacks are but they seem to be better than bearbacks or teabaggin. (hahaha)

Mad Men- Can't wait till Aug 16th- it will be 1963

It will be 1963 on Aug. 16, 2009 for the new season of Mad Men
MAJOR EVENTS:
**President Kennedy assassinated in Dallas, Texas; Vice President Lyndon Johnson becomes President. The accused assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, is shot and killed a short time later.
**Civil rights protests continue throughout the South, during which nonviolent activists are frequently met with beatings and arrests. 200,000 people march on Washington in support of civil rights; Dr. Martin Luther King delivers his "I Have a Dream" speech.
**U.S., Soviet Union and Britain sign a nuclear test ban treaty
**Scandals in British Parliament leads to resignations of key officials
**"Great train robbery" in Britain yields £2.5 million for thieves
**Kenya gains independence
**Pope John XXIII dies; Cardinal Montini elected Pope, takes name of Paul VI
**Washington-Moscow "hot line" established
**Congress expands its investigation of organized crime
Oh and this also happened in 1963: Betty Friedan publishes her highly influential book The Feminine Mystique, which describes the dissatisfaction felt by middle-class American housewives with the narrow role imposed on them by society. The book becomes a best-seller and galvanizes the modern women's rights movement.
and on June 10 Congress passes the Equal Pay Act, making it illegal for employers to pay a woman less than what a man would receive for the same job.

Frank's Place Lancaster PA

Frank's place has opened @454 New Holland Ave. Lancaster, PA 17602-2289
(717) 390-2626.
Frank's new shop is on New Holland Ave next to the Science Factory. Parking is next to the shop with a few spaces or in Quips Pub/Science factory parking lot. Please DO NOT park on N. Plum street. The residents on N. Plum St. have enough problems with parking already.
I thought the food was priced reasonable but 2 other people I spoke with thought it was slightly overpriced for what they served and the area it is in. My lunch prices are a little off kilter since I work in King of Prussia, PA =$$. I have gotten take out from Frank's Place and it was just OK. I will go back since it is so close but I do hope they get more organized. The few people I have spoken too that have ordered and eaten there have said the same thing. I never ate @ Frank's other location on Lime st. years ago so I can't compare. I just hope the staff gets its act together soon. It does seem to be doing a good business. Staff training is needed, I recommend learning the menu when taking take out orders, ( you need to be able to answer customers questions so they later are not overcharged) answering the phone more professionally and respecting the customer, better teamwork all around is clearly needed.
I know that's a little rough and I am not expecting a Thomas Keller staffed and trained restaurant but it is a true critque. I do want to spend my $$$ there.

Pints for Prostates is a grassroots effort to reach men with a critical message about prostate cancer screening using the universal language of beer.
Started by prostate cancer survivor and drinks journalist Rick Lyke, the goal of the program is to communicate with men in a friendly and non-threatening way about the need for regular PSA testing.

WTF- PA National Guard miss pay cause of Budget Impasse

Members of the Pa. National Guard miss active-duty stipends because of budget impasse!!

Over 500 members of the Pennsylvania National Guard -- many of whom have served in Iraq and Afghanistan -- are also state employees out a gratuity stipend due to the budget impasse, a spokesman with the state department of Military and Veterans Affairs confirmed Friday.
The stipends, due to members of the National Guard on active duty, are payments of $520 a month on top of the federal salary paid to active military members, said Kevin Cramsey, a spokesman with the state Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

Just 77 of the 568 state employees active duty were not given their June payments. Those 77 are employed by state agencies on a payroll calendar that would have paid them Friday, a payless payday for all state employees due to the ongoing budget impasse.
However, all 568 of them may be looking at working July and August without their stipends, barring Gov. Ed Rendell's passage of a bridge budget.
"If things stay the way they are right now, they may not see their August payment," Cleaver said.
This puts the men and women in harm's way in the same boat as thousands of unpaid state workers facing pay cuts and payless paydays in the wake of the impasse: They are out money due to them.
There are 1,782 Pennsylvania National Guard members working for Commonwealth agencies, Cramsey said. Of that number, 568 were given the active duty status necessary to receive the monthly payment. In many cases -- but not always -- active duty means a man or woman in uniform who is deployed in Iraq or Afghanistan. Only those who left their civilian jobs to go into active duty eligible.
Scott Detrow, a reporter with WITF radio embedded with the Pennsylvania National Guard's 56th Stryker Brigade, reported that members of that unit were dissatisfied with the impasse
on his Twitter feed Thursday morning.
There, he reported: "A lot of state workers in 56th, and everyone I've talked to is miffed about ongoing impasse. Many blame Governor Rendell for the delay."

Oh, the Beer Summit

Let me weigh in on the beer summit.... we all know the story and what happened or pieces of it. I read the entire police report and followed on many the story on many different news sites/blogs/wire reports. So I don't want to talk about the issues here. I want to talk about the beer selections, duh.

Here is a description of the event from the New York Times:

The menu for the meeting round an outside table in the warm Washington afternoon featured each man's preferred brew: Bud Light for Obama, Blue Moon for Crowley and Sam Adams Light for Gates. Vice President Joe Biden, also at the table, had a Buckler nonalcoholic beer.
The men drank from clear glass mugs and munched on peanuts and pretzels served in small silver bowls. Gates and Crowley brought their families to the White House and they toured the East Wing together before they sat down with Obama.
A national debate about the arrest, the reaction and the "beer summit" carried into evening news shows as commentators dissected the implications of the meeting for the race issue.

It has been reported all week that Gates had requested a Red Stripe Lager as his requested beer. Then before the Beer Summit, Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Co.-Sam Adams, a Boston based company that helped revolutionised the microbrewing business was on NPR saying he was disappointed that no one at the Beer summit was drinking a micro brew but instead were drinking beer made and mass produced by big business, big companies. It has now been reported that GATES changed his mind and requested a Sam Adams Light and drank that.

Bud Lite-Anheuser-Busch Co.
Red Stripe Jamaican Lager-Desnoes and Geddes LTD
Blue Moon-Molson Coors Co.

I have been thinking all week... what beer I would request if I was sitting down to drink a beer with the President? My pick would be-Fisherman's Ale from the Cape Ann Brewing Co. A crisp & refreshing German Kolsch style ale offering an exceptional, imported barley flavors in a lighter style! 6% ABV. A Gold Medal winner at the 2007 Great International Beer Festival for Light Ale! Plus they donate a portion of all money made to the Northeast Seafood Coalition to help the local economy.

Budget Hostage

I've printed up small flyer's that say the following to give out to places I patronize this weekend. I just want a free beer....not really.... I just want people to understand. I have run into a lot of people who do not watch the news or read a newspaper and have no idea. a lot of people have their own problems. I understand that.

I am a state employee, taxpayer and customer , who just patronized
your business.
If a budget is not passed by mid-July, I will be forced to work without a paycheck and will no longer be able to patronize your business.
We want to continue to do our part to support Pennsylvania’s
economy. Thank you for supporting us in return!
